Osinbajo Rallies D-8 Countries On Just Energy Transition

The need for developing countries to foster closer relations and refocus attention on trade and energy access for the benefit of the people has been stressed.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo made the assertion when he received the Secretary General of the Developing 8 (D-8) Organisation, Isiaka Imam, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Nigeria is a member of the D-8, an organisation for development cooperation among eight developing countries; Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.

Osinbajo explained that the current trend in the global economy, climate change and the Ukrainian conflict presented opportunities for collaboration among developing economies.

The Vice-President added that Nigeria offered a great prospect for expanding trade among the D-8 members, noting that there was a need to look at how to use Nigeria as a point to explore opportunities in the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, AfCTA.

In his remarks, Imam said there is an effort to revive trade among member countries in the new order of the D-8, especially in improving trade volumes from 121 billion dollars to a new target of about 500 billion dollars by 2030.
