The National Association of Seadogs , Pyrates Confraternity has called on government at all levels to create adequate awareness against the current high rate of hypertension in the country.
The Medical Director of the association, Dr Joseph Oteri, made the call in Abuja at a sensitisation/awareness programme to mark the 2019 World Hypertension Day.
The world hypertension day is usually marked every May 17 to sensitise people on the danger and how to manage the illness.
According to Oteri, government needs to create more awareness for the people and put in place various measures that will reduce the prospect of having it.
He attributed the illness which he said was common in the South West part of the country to poor dieting and lifestyle.
Oteri said 30 per cent of the cases was a result of salt intake, 20 per cent reduction in fruit and vegetable, while 20 per cent is from inactive lifestyle. He added that the remaining 30 per cent could be attributed to lack of general proper dieting.
