An Optometrist, Njong Onugu has called for inclusion of vision care in Universal Health Coverage, UHC to ensure access to eye care by all citizens without suffering financial burden.

Onugu, Head, Eye Care Unit, Public Health Department and Human Service Secretariat, Abuja made the call on Saturday, in commemoration of the World Optometry Day.

The World Optometry Day is commemorated annually on March 23rd to raise awareness about optometry and its role in eye care and general health delivery.

Onugu explained that inclusion of the vision care sector in UHC would improve the quality of life of the people through access to eye care by all and reduction of financial burden of the populace challenged with visual health.

She lamented that presently, majority of the populace lacked visual care due to cost of care and lack of access to eye care providers especially at the rural areas.
