The Federal Government has put the economic cost of post-harvest losses at 3.5 trillion naira annually in the Agricultural sector.

The Federal Government has put the economic cost of post-harvest losses at 3.5 trillion naira annually in the Agricultural sector.

Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development Mustapha Shehuri announced this   known at the presentation of the International Standard Organisation, ISO, Certification for Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute  in Abuja.

Shehuri, who was represented by the Director, Lands and Climate Change Management Services in the ministry, Shehu Bello noted that post-harvest losses had a negative effect on Agricultural component Domestic Product, GDP.

He assured that the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute, NSPRI is set to address the challenge through acquisition of enabling infrastructure, tools, equipment and commitment of the Research staff.

The Minister commended the Nigeria Standards Organization, NSO  and International Standards Organisation ISO, for deeming it fit to accredit the laboratory.

Earlier, the Executive Director, Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute, NSPRI, Patricia Pessu, while presenting the ISO, Certificate to Shehuri said the approval of the certificate would boost food export from Nigeria to other parts of the world.
