The United States has condemned a militant attack on a bus in central Mali that killed at least 31 people and injured 17.

State Department spokesman Ned Price in a written statement recalled that unknown gunmen on Friday opened fire on the bus as it traveled from the village of Songho to a market in Bandiagara, 10 kilometres away.

The villages sit in the heart of the Mopti region, an epicenter of violence in Mali fueled by insurgents linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State.

He added the Uninted state extend it condolences to the Malian people and will continue to partner with them in their pursuit of a safe, prosperous, and democratic future.

The terrorists’ attacks have surged across Africa’s Sahel region, killing thousands and displacing millions across Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger republic.

In another development, a Rwandan Court has sentenced to five years in prison a former Director of Kigali’s main prison Innocent Kayumba for stealing money from a British inmate.

A Court document has indicated that Kayumba, who was sentenced alongside his former Deputy Eric Ntakirutimana, has appealed against the verdict,
