The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sabo Nanono has launched the Gender Policy on Agriculture, to tackle gender imbalance in agricultural practices in Nigeria.
The Minister, while delivering his remarks at the launch in Abuja said the occasion signaled a giant stride and commitment of the ministry toward mainstreaming gender in the agricultural sector for improved food security.
He said that the policy was consistent with the global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by World Leaders at the UN Summit in New York in September 2015.
He said that the policy was consistent with the agenda, which underscored the vital role agriculture played in eradicating poverty, ending hunger, achieving food security, improved nutrition and sustainable agriculture, among others.
The Assistant Director and Head of Gender Unit in the
Ministry of Agriculture, Ifeoma Anyanwu said the launch was a milestone
that would enable all gender to have equal opportunity to agricultural
resources.
