Communal Conflicts: Soldier Shot, Many Injured In Gombe Clash

Reports say soldier was killed in Nyuwar community in Balanga council of Gombe State as the Waja and Lunguda tribes clashed on the Adamawa state border. Nyuwar is about two hours drive from Gombe, the capital of Gombe State.

An eyewitness, Edwin Alokhi said violence broke out earlier Tuesday when Waja youths attacked Nyuwar, killing one of the soldiers stationed to maintain peace in the community after the April, last year clash. He added that the youths, who outnumbered the security operatives, later went on rampage setting houses on fire and attacking women and children.

In another development, a High Court in Niger State has sentenced 11 persons to death by hanging for killing seven people in Gaba and Anfani community in Lavun local government area in December 2018 over a land dispute.

Justice Maimuna Talatu Abubakar, while delivering her verdict found the defendants guilty of culpable homicide punishable under Section 221 of the penal code, which attracts the death penalty.

It was gathered that twenty-two persons were arrested and charged to court in Minna on October 7, 2019 following the Gaba attack, as 15 were discharged and acquitted.
