The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, has pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to sign into law the bill to abolish First Degree, BSC and Higher National Diploma, HND dichotomy before leaving office on May 29.

National President of ASUP, Anderson Ezeibe, who made the call in Abuja, noted that the dichotomy had made many youths not to be interested in polytechnic education in the country.

He added that it would be a memorable legacy if Buhari assents to the dichotomy bill before he exited office.

Ezeibe, argued that stakeholders in the polytechnic education sector had asked the Ninth National Assembly to pass the “Bill for an Act to Abolish and Prohibit Dichotomy and Discrimination between BSC and HND”.

The piece of legislation, sponsored by Ayo Akinyelure, passed the third reading on the floor of the Senate at plenary.

In his contribution, Chairman of the Joint Committee, Ibrahim Shekarau said the passage of the Bill will freeholders of HND from stagnation and ensure balanced treatment with their counterparts from other higher tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
