The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, Situation Room has issued an interim report on the Anambra State Governorship election, noting with displeasure the widespread vote-buying recorded across various polling units during the election on Saturday.
Convener of the Situation Room Ene Obi flanked by her two co-conveners, Asma’u Joda and James Ugochukwu, while addressing journalists in Awka, noted that against the background of potential violence rhetoric leading up to the election, the exercise was peaceful even though there were minor of disturbances.
The situation Room said it received reports of vote buying by political party agents with some cases of sale of votes for amounts ranging from 1,000 naira and 6,000 naira at various locations.
It also noted that reports from field observers showed prevalent malfunction of the Bi-Modal Verification Accreditation System, BVAS as it failed to authenticate voters’ fingerprints and detect faces.
The Situation Room however commended the Media for following the process courageously despite the tensed political environment and called on the resilient people of Anambra to remain calm and law abiding as the election runs its course.
