A South African minister has described the ongoing xenophobic attacks in the country as an African problem that requires leaders across the continent to “put their heads together.

Lindiwe Zulu, Social Development Minister

Social Development Minister, Lindiwe Zulu said that the attacks were beyond South Africa’s control because of the rise in undocumented African immigrants flooding into the country.

Unrest has gripped some cities with bands of angry residents roaming streets and looting some foreign-owned shops.

Some angry residents in Johannesburg have called on the government to deport undocumented migrants.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned the attacks and convened a security meeting to find ways to stop them.

African governments have issued warnings to their citizens over the violence, with Nigeria sending an envoy to express its “displeasure”.
