UN Secretary-General António Guterres has identified rapid population growth and vulnerability to climate change as the challenges faced by the world’s least developed countries in their drive toward sustainable development.

The UN scribe said this in a statement published on the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Website on Thursday to commemorate the World Population Day celebrated on July 11 of every year.

According to him, some other countries are facing the challenge of ageing populations, the need to promote healthy, active ageing as well as accessing adequate social protection.

He said that the world’s overall population “continues to increase”, but the growth had been uneven.

Guterres said that in the course of managing population trends, “we must also recognise the relationship between population, development, and individual well-being”
