Nigeria’s Flying Eagles beat Dominican Republic 2-1 in their opening game at the 2023 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Mendoza on Sunday.

Dominican Republic, playing in their first-ever game in a FIFA tournament, took a lead on 23 minutes through Captain Edison Azcona, who was awarded a penalty.

The lead lasted eight minutes, with Guillermo de Pena scored an own goal for Nigeria’s equaliser.

The Flying Eagles were in control of the game after the break, as the winning goal came 20 minutes from time by Samson Lawal.

The Flying Eagles will now face Italy in their next game on Wednesday.
