Tunisia’s President Beni Caid Essebsi has died at the Tunis military hospital, the office of the presidency announced on Thursday.
The 92-year-old was admitted to hospital on Wednesday, his family said.
Essebsi had been hospitalised last month after suffering a “severe health crisis”.
The nonagenarian became Tunisia’s first freely elected president in December 2014, following the removal of Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011.
He was due to step down when his term ends this November.
