The Federal Government has approved the construction of a modern tsetse mass rearing facility in Vom, to effectively fight the scourge of trypanosomiasis.
The facility is to create millions of sterile male tsetse flies for field release to mop-up populations that may persist after overpowering to attain eradication.
Science and Technology Minister Ogbonnaya Onu explained that tsetse fly poses serious problems to livestock production in Africa as well as human health.
He said that Nigeria is willing to lead Africa in the fight against tsetse fly and will work with other nations in Africa to recover land presently occupied by the insects.
