The United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia, UNSOM has called on Somalia to hold an elections by the end of 2020 or early 2021.

The Mission, comprising of the United Nations, UN; the European Union, EU and 15 other partners, has also cautioned against the President’s tenure being extended.

Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, also known by the nickname Farmajo, was elected as President in 2017.

Somalia’s electoral process is a intricate compromise that sees a group os elders select delegates, who in turn form electoral colleges that determine who is elected President, which has been marred by allegations of vote-buying.

The UNSOM members said the future election model should enable the widest possible involvement and result in peaceful election of leaders who have broad acceptability.
