National Secretary-General, Academic Staff Union of Research Institutions, Theophilus Ndabuaku, has commended the Federal Government for establishing the National Research Organisation Council to re-position research in Nigeria.

Ndabuaku gave the commendation on Tuesday, in Abuja, during a rally organised by the Union to appreciate government for setting up the council.

Ndabuaku described as unacceptable the dependence of institutional research on budgetary allocation, which was most times inadequate and unable to achieve any meaningful result.

He noted that most researchers personally funded their research work because if they failed to do so, they would not be promoted or obtain higher degrees. He said though Nigeria had 150 research institutions, centres and allied institutions, not much was being done to harness the human, material and natural resources to fund research and bring about development.
