Picketing: Federal Government Threatens Labour Unions Over Unlawful Actions

The Federal Government has cautioned labour unions that any unlawful picketing will attract the full weight of the law.

Minister of Labour and Employment Chris Ngige gave the warning in a statement issued by the Deputy Director Press and Public Relations in the ministry Charles Akpan in Abuja.

He added that the Federal Government will not condone further hooliganism in the disguise of trade unionism, noting that the Government would no longer fold its hands while what ought to be a peaceful agitation by unions crossed the boundary of lawfulness as stated in Section 43 of the Trade Unions Act 2004.

Ngige also recalled that the offices of the Minister, Minister of State and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Trade and Investment were locked for days by agitating workers unions. The Minister however noted the action is to prevent other workers and officers of government from carrying out their lawful duties.

He also stressed that the fact that the Federal Government allowed the unions time to come to terms with the illegality they embarked upon and doing the right thing, does not constitute license for further illegality.
