The United Nations peacekeeping mission, says 45 persons have been killed in an attack on a camp for internally displaced persons, IDP in north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

It added that the attack is believed to have been perpetrated by fighters belonging to a coalition of militia groups called the Cooperative for the Development of the Congo, CODECO.

The UN mission Democratic Republic of the Congo said the fighters slaughtered vulnerable displaced people at the Lala displacement site in Djugu territory.

The site is located 5 kilometres from Bule, the site of a UN peacekeeping base.

CODECO claims to protect the Lendu community from another ethnic group, the Hema, as well as the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s army.

the UN peacekeeping mission in a statement, extended its condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
