The Kaduna State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, N.U.T, has urged the state government to discard the idea of conducting another competency test for teachers in public primary schools in the state.
The union suggested that funds meant for the exercise should be channelled to training and re-training of teachers.
The Kaduna state government had on July 14, announced plans to
conduct another competency test for primary school teachers to ensure
quality teaching in basic schools.
It would be recalled that the state government had, in January 2018,
sacked about 22,000 teachers for allegedly failing a competency test
conducted in 2017.
The union, in a communique it issued at the end of an emergency
meeting of its Executive Council, held in Kaduna argued that writing a
competency test does not determine the skill of a teacher.
The union said it supported the competency test conducted in 2017 to
improve the quality of teaching and learning in public primary schools in
the state, but has now unanimously resolved that no teacher in public
primary school will sit for a competency test again.
