Police in Ivory Coast have launched an investigation after two dead babies were discovered at a landfill site in the Akouedo area of Abidjan.
The bodies, along with human remains such as fibroids and umbilical cords, were found on Sunday morning, raising concerns about possible illegal practices.
Authorities believe the materials may have been discarded by a clinic or hospital, and the city’s chief of police confirmed the presence of medical equipment at the scene.
While abandoned newborns are occasionally found, this discovery of “human waste” is unusual.
In 2022, the government revealed plans to shut down illegal clinics, citing that more than 80 percent of private establishments failed to meet health standards.
