The Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development says the country is losing 80 percent of revenue that would have accrued from the solid minerals sector, to illegal mining.
The Ministry’s Plan Officer, Abunuma Samuel stated this while speaking to newsmen after sensitising artisanal miners in Maru, Talata-Mafara Local Government in Zamfara. He added that government is concerned over illegal mining in the state in spite of its order.
The federal government had, in April 2019, announced a ban on mining in Zamfara and its environs, it said the ban was part of measures to address the security challenges in the state.
In a remark, Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC Aliyu Alhaji-Garba, regretted that miners were still involved in illegal activities in spite of the ban.
Also, the Emir of Maru, Abubakar Maigari, who also spoke while receiving the surveillance team at his palace, urged the government to review the ban. He also advised the federal government to embark on sensitisation, instead of a total ban on mining.
