The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq has solicited collaboration from US and EU toward attaining the new ministry’s mandate.

She made the demand when Kathleen Fitegibbon, Charge’d Affairs in the US Embassy, Country Director of USAID Steve Haykin, and EU Ambassador to Nigeria Ketil Karlsen paid her separate visits in Abuja.

During the discussion with Fitegibbon and Haykin, Farouq, she said that the ministry was established to alleviate poverty and hunger.

She added that the ministry was mandated to coordinate and supervise the humanitarian activities of government and International Non-Governmental Organisations, INGOs.

On her part, Fitegibbon said that the purpose of their visit was to learn more about what the new ministry is doing, and because they have a lot of investments in humanitarian operations in Nigeria.

Similarly, Haykin said that it had always been difficult to partner with coordinating government agencies on humanitarian affairs.
