The National Groundnut Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria has called for Federal Government’s intervention to restore the days of groundnut pyramid in Nigeria.

The Association’s President Aimu Foni who made the call in Abuja said it was disheartening to note that groundnut, a one-time major contributor to the country’s Gross Domestic Product, GDP was almost nowhere in terms of export.

He said some challenges including the unavailability of improved and quality seeds as well as lack of mechanisation were responsible for the state of groundnut in Nigeria.

Foni explained that wrong application of fertilisers and pesticides by farmers had compounded the problem. He added that other countries, most times do not patronise Nigeria’s groundnut over health concerns.
