Governor Ben Ayade Cross River State has advocated the regulations of the social media to curb fake news that is fast becoming a threat to national unity and development of Nigeria.

Ayade made the call as Special Guest of Honour in Calabar at Nigerian Broadcasting Commission, NBC 2019 National Broadcast Summit with the theme: Broadcasting and Democracy: Emerging Security Imperatives.

Liberty News Correspondent, Abdull-Azeez Ahmed Kadir reports that the Governor stressed that the current tension in the country and certain challenges nationwide, is a result of the media failure, and NBC must rise to the occasion and check the threat.

Ayade said nowhere in the world that there is absolute freedom, and for anyone to be free, he must summit his freedom to the law. The supposed lack of national cohesion he added is more creation of the media than reality.

Chairman of the event, former Director General of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN and Nigerian Television Authority, NTA Muhammed Ibrahim said the role of the media in shaping opinion and government decision cannot be overemphasized. The media he asserted must speak truth to power to ensure values that will nurture democracy are sustained.
