The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, NEITI, has stated that it has begun steps to probe the consumption volume of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly known as petrol, in Nigeria amid the hardship of fuel subsidy removal.

The Executive Secretary, NEITI, Ogbonnaya Orji, disclosed this in Abuja while speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the Stakeholders Validation Workshop on the 2022 Annual Progress Report for Nigeria’s Extractive Industries.

He said the purported daily fuel consumption may be less than presented.

Nigeria’s daily fuel consumption had been controversial.

However, in September last year, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority insisted that the country consumes 66.8 million litres of petrol daily.

Recall that upon the emergence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, he declared the removal of fuel subsidy removal.

The announcement led to an upward adjustment of petrol pump prices from N195 per litre to over N577 per litre.
