Electoral Bill 2021: Presidency Justifies Buhari’s Rejection, Says Nigeria’s Interest First

The Presidency has justified President Muhammadu Buhari’s refusal of the Electoral Act amendment bill, saying it is meant to protect the country’s democracy from moneybag political parties including his party, All Progressives Congress, APC.

Buhari’s media aide Garba Shehu, who said this in a statement in Abuja, was reacting to those expressing reservations over the president’s decision to withhold assent from the Electoral Act amendment bill 2021.

He added that the President arrived at his decision to withhold assent after careful review of the amended bill.

Shehu also dismissed the assertion in some quarters that the President’s rejection was meant to rig the 2023 general elections in favour of his party, the APC.

The media aide said the usual voices are making themselves heard, with claims of election rigging and so on.
