The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC has advocated for the prioritisation of water, sanitation and hygiene in the response to COVID-19.
The Commission’s Executive Secretary Tony Ojukwu, made the call in Abuja during a stakeholders webinar meeting on access to clean water and sanitation.
He also called on all actors, including governments to commit to measurable action at the community level to increase access to clean water, saying no responsible government can afford to play politics with such essential commodity.
Ojukwu explained that the stakeholders’ meeting was aimed at strengthening and reinforcing the right to clean water and sanitation in Nigeria, through collaboration with the Commission.
The Commission’s Assistant director, legal Oluwayemisi Akhile, while speaking on the theme “Unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene in Nigeria’s public spaces: its effects on the COVID 19 pandemic on human rights, tasked governments at all level to provide access to clean water.
