Commission Tasks North East States On Employment Of PLWDS

The National Commission for Persons With Disabilities has urged state governments and private sector in the North East, to ensure provision of five per cent employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Executive Secretary of the Commission, James Lalu, made the call at the North East Zonal Town Hall meeting in Yola.

Lulu said that the meeting was designed to enhance advocacy, create awareness and encourage compliance with Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Act 2018.

This, he said, would ensure provision of five per cent employment opportunities to the PLWDs in the region.

He said the Commission was mandated to ensure improvement of the living condition of the PLWDs and protection against any form of discrimination based on their disabilities.

According to him, discrimination against PLWDs is now a criminal offence, adding that the Commission was partnering with the police to ensure implementation of the Act.
