The National President of Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, Joyce Barber has called on Nigerians to donate blood voluntarily to save lives.

Barber made the appeal in Kaduna during a rally to sensitise citizens on the importance of donating blood to patients. She decried the shortage of blood in the country’s hospitals at emergency moments.

The President of the association therefore called on Nigerians to imbibe the habit of donating blood to prevent loss of lives in hospitals as a result of lack of blood.

Barber noted that there was shortage of blood in view of its high demand all over the country.

Barber also urged religious leaders and traditional rulers to educate their followers on the need for Nigerians to be their brother’s keepers by donating blood at designated blood transfusion centres to make it available for the needy.

A Philebotomist, Deborah Kure said more awareness needs to be done to get response from donors. Kure, a blood professional collector in a medical laboratory, said the state had received about 200 units of blood from April to June, this year.
