Basketball: Nigeria Holds Federation’s Elections January, 2022 To Evade FIBA Sanction

The International Basketball Federation, FIBA has given the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development January 30, 2022 to conduct elections into the Executive Board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF or risk sanctioned.

FIBA had in a letter dated November 10 to NBBF Secretary-General Musa Ahmadu-Kida and signed by its President, Hamane Niang, and Secretary-General, Andreas Zagklis, cautioned the Sports Ministry against interfering in basketball in the country.

It also stated that elections into the board of the federation be conducted on or before November 30 or the nation would find itself facing sanctions.

However, a top FIBA official who pleaded anonymity said the federation is no longer mandated to have the election by November 30 as a reconciliation committee set up by the Sports Ministry was looking into finding a lasting solution to the federation’s lingering issues.

The ministry in the place of the caretaker committee led by Ahmadu-Kida set up a task force to run the affairs of the federation and the D’Tigers’ FIBA World Cup qualifiers.
