Nigeria’s Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has declared his intention to contest the 2023 Presidential Election in the country.
Prof. Osinbajo’s declaration was made on Monday morning in a
recorded video message broadcast on national televisions.
The vice president said the tutelage he has had in the past seven years
working with President Muhammadu Buhari has equipped him with the
experience to serve Nigeria as president.
His declaration ends months of speculation over his interest in the 2023
presidential race and widens the pool of candidates for the position.
It also puts him in direct confrontation with his former boss in Lagos
State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who signalled his intention earlier in the
year.
In his declaration speech, Osinbajo said he was committed to continuing
President Muhammadu Buhari’s vision for the country.
The Vice-President was nominated as Buhari’s running mate in 2014
and was elected alongside Buhari in 2015.
Osinbajo will be contesting the APC Presidential primary against Bola
Tinubu; the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; Ebonyi State
Governor, Dave Umahi; and Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State.
