President of the Nigeria Football Federation Amaju Pinnick says Super Eagles will be in the top five ranked teams in Africa ahead of the 2022 World Cup play-offs following Egypt’s 1-0 win over Lebanon at the ongoing 2021 FIFA Arab Cup.
Pinnick made the assertion after a closed-door meeting with the Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, the ministry’s permanent secretary and the chief of staff to the Minister in Abuja.
It would be recalled that the Confederation of African Football, CAF at its Extraordinary General Assembly held in Cairo, Egypt last Friday announced that the draws for the play-offs will be held on January 26.
CAF also said the FIFA ranking for the month of January will be used to determine the seeded teams for the playoffs.
Pinnick however reiterated that the decision of CAF Executive Committee was that the FIFA ranking for the month of November would be used for the Qatar 2022 World Cup play-off draws and not otherwise.
The top five teams in the continent will be seeded and will face the non-seed teams in the two-legged fixtures. Qualified teams for the playoffs are Senegal, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Nigeria are Egypt, Cameroon, Ghana, Mali, and Democratic Republic of Congo.
