Kenya is due to import its first consignment of genetically modified GM maize as it grapples with high prices of the staple food amid a devastating drought.
Trade Minister Moses Kuria said the government had allowed duty-free importation of 10 million bags of the GM maize over the next six months.
Millions of Kenyans are facing severe hunger amid a drought in many parts of the country that has persisted in the past year.
Kenya’s new administration last month reversed a policy banning the introduction of genetically modified foods in the country over health concerns.
The lifting of the ban was opposed by activist groups and some farmers have questioned the safety of GM crops.
