VAPP Act 2015: NAPTIP Confirms 20 States Domesticate Sexual, Gender-Based Violence Act

The National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP says about 20 states of the federation have domesticated the Violence against Persons Prohibition, VAPP Act 2015 for implementation.

NAPTIP’s Director of Public Enlightenment Josiah Emerole, made this know at a sensitisation on sexual and gender-based violence on Thursday in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state. He noted that Bayelsa state domesticated the VAPP Act 2015 and enacted it in 2021 as VAPP Law 2021 to protect the society from the ills of sexual and gender-based violence.

Emerole said the Federal Government assigned the responsibility of implementing the VAPP Act to NAPTIP in addition to its anti-human trafficking role in its Establishment Act.

The Spokesman listed sexual and gender-based violence to include rape, spousal battery, female genital mutilation/circumcision, and forceful ejection from home amongst others.

In her remarks, a Child Rights Activist Juliet Pulu expressed regret that parents had abdicated their roles, alienated their children, exposed them and made them victims of sexual violence.

She however advised parents to create time for their children and to take active interest in their overall development rather than putting the burden on teachers.
