A non-governmental organization, Mercy Corps Nigeria, has called on journalists to focus on survivors while reporting cases related to Gender Based Violence, GBV.

The Communication Officer, Educating Nigerian Girls in New Enterprise, a program being implemented by Mercy Corps, Oluwawemimo Onikan, made the call at a news conference in Abuja.

The conference was organized ahead of the international Human Rights Day and to commemorate the 16 days of activism against Gender Based Violence declared by the United Nations, from November 25thto December 10th.

The Communication Officer said that survivors centered approach in news reporting, would empower survivors by putting them at the center of healing process. She added that journalists should be emphatic, but avoid judgemental language during interviews with the organisation survivors.

Earlier, the Deputy Country Director, Mercy Corps, Ram Kishan said the organization was ready to partner with the media in fighting gender based violence in the country.
