Yemi Osinbajo, made the call when declaring open the National Consultation and Launch of Alliance 8.7 on Thursday in Abuja.
Alliance 8.7 is a global partnership committed to taking immediate and effective measures to eradicate forced labour, modern slavery, human trafficking and child labour in accordance with target 8.7 of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Osinbajo, represented by Minister of State, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Stephen Ocheni, said the Federal Government had joined other countries of the United Nations to adopt the global Sustained Development Agenda in September, 2015.
Osinbajo said that ILO had estimated the global figure of child labourers to be 168 million with Nigeria accounting for not less than 15 million; 21 million is estimated to engage in forced labour, including 5.5 million children globally.
He
noted that according to ILO, about 25 per cent of Nigeria’s 80 million children
under the age of 14 are engaged in economic activities.
