Burundi’s authorities have issued an international arrest warrant against exiled opposition politician Alexis Sinduhije for accusing leading a group responsible for multiple “terrorist acts”.
The country’s Attorney General Sylvestre Nyandwi announced this following a string of attacks in recent days that have left at least six people dead and more than 100 injured.
He however, said the warrant related to earlier attacks, including grenade explosions and ambushes that have killed dozens and injured several since the start of 2020.
Nyandwi explained that the probes already carried out have shown that the acts are committed by a band of terrorists led by Alexis Sinduhije.
Sinduhije, the president of the opposition Movement for Solidarity and Development, MSD, lives in exile in Belgium. He is alleged to be behind multiple past attacks that took place in Burundi
He has long been suspected by the Burundian government of being at the helm of RED-Tabara, the most active rebel group in the country – a claim he has always denied.
