France has called on the Republic of Iran not to seek retribution in the wake of the U.S. airstrike that killed Iran’s elite Quds Force leader Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian says “No-one wants war,” adding that possibilities for negotiations must be created.
The U.S. airstrike has prompted fears over an outbreak of war in the region and left the nuclear agreement struck with Tehran hanging by a thread.
French President Emmanuel Macron has been trying to bring U.S. and Iranian representatives together for talks, an initiative he presented at the G7 summit in Biarritz in August but which was not successful.
In another development, Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, UNSMIL, Ghassam Salamé has called on other countries to desist from interfering in the ongoing crisis in the country.
Salamé made the call while addressing newsmen after a closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council that focused on the conflict in the Iraq and other parts of the Middle East.
