Poor Governance: Dr Congo Assembly Sacks SUD Kivu Province Governor

Governor Theo Ngwabidje of Sud Kivu province in Democratic Republic of Congo has been fired by the Assembly.

Ngwabidje was voted out in a motion of no confidence with many accusations made including poor governance.

It was reported that the assembly session was held amid a clash between the police and members of the public who were outside the assembly building in the provincial capital Bukavu. The session was attended by 33 representatives, 28 of whom voted for the governor’s dismissal.

Ngwabidje has been asked to submit his resignation to the president within 48 hours. Sud Kivu has suffered insecurity like most of eastern DR Congo because of the presence of armed rebels.

Ethiopia’s Education Ministry has announced a temporary shutdown of all secondary schools to allow students to help in harvesting crops for citizens on the war front.

Education Minister Berhanu Nega says schools would be closed for a week, adding that over 1.2 million students were out of school due to the ongoing conflict in the north. The government had announced a six-month state of emergency in November to contain a Tigrayan rebel advancement towards the capital, Addis Ababa.
